what our sacred books say about justice & social change

A joint service and Panel discussion

The goal of this service is to bring attention to the historical alliance for justice that the African American and Jewish Communities forged during the American Civil Rights Movement and how we can recall that alliance to act together in the here in now on issues important to both of our communities, especially the George Floyd Act and Redistricting. It brings me to the formula of God hearing a cry of desperate pain, being moved with compassion, and then sending a deliverer. In my mind, we are the deliverers that God is sending and just how spiritual lifting oppression is.

The theme of this service and message that we want to teach and discuss is, “What Our Sacred Books Say About Justice & Social Change?”. We know exactly how much our Sacred Texts say on this subject, but others do not. Our job is to educate them, especially our legislators, because it is deeply spiritual. I believe casting issues in religious language is an important move in the legislative process. It brings to my attention the story of Esther, which I have looked at as a type of lobbyist in how she educated herself on the issues, dressed to the nines, asked the King to dinner, educated him on the issues, wrote the legislation, and then implemented it. This is all reminiscent of the dream I have of us working together in a similar way in the very near future.
